Scissors Sharpening There are two major components of the blade which must be addressed when sharpening scissors. First is the edge, is it a convex or bevel? Most Japanese shears have a convex edge, designed to give you a clean, sharp cut. Slide cutting is best accomplished with a convex edge. A bevel edge will tear the hair if you try slide cutting. A bevel edge is normally found on less expensive shears, such as barber or dog grooming scissors. Another factor of the edge that must be considered is its angle. If you expect your scissors to cut like new after a sharpening, the edge must be sharpened at its original angle and given a restored convex or beveled edge.
The other key component of the blade is its radius, which is a slight curve from the hilt to the tip. The radius holds the hair in place while you cut. If the radius is straightened, the blades will push the hair away as they come together. Quality shears usually have an 800 millimeter radius, though a few have a more dramatic curvature. The radius must be matched when sharpening. Otherwise, your shears will be modified from factory specifications and will never again cut the same.

Diamond Rose Superior Sharpening System
We highly recommend that your shears be sharpened with our Diamond Rose Superior Sharpening System (TM). Our patented Diamond Rose Superior Sharpening System is the only system in the world that can do a convex or bevel edge at a precise angle, and maintain (or restore) the radius, utilizing precision settings and guides. Our sharpening system allows the technician to consistently sharpen any brand of scissors, retaining the factory specifications every time.
Other sharpeners claim to be able to put a sharp edge on your shears, but no other system addresses the two key components of blade technology and, therefore, generally end up damaging the shears.
The typical “flat hone” water honing system will straighten the radius. Although your shears may initially appear sharp, they no longer can “hold” the hair in place the way they were designed. Often, the convex edge is also damaged, or converted to a bevel. When the angle of the edge is altered, it will not remain sharp as long as it is intended to.
Grinders will convert your convex edge to a bevel edge and make no provision whatsoever for the precision of the 800 millimeter radius. The grinder is designed for sharpening low-end barber scissors, dog grooming scissors, and fabric scissors. Beware of any system that does sharpening “by hand”. It is simply not possible to match factory specifications by hand.
As a professional stylist dependent on your tools, you simply cannot afford to have your shears ruined or diminished in value by a poor sharpening job. You can lose customers by giving them split ends when you cut with dull scissors. Click here to see an article about split ends.
