How to Select the Right Shear

First you must understand your goal. Are you a new stylist? Are you buying your first pair of good shears? If so, you need to concentrate on the basics. You need a good styling shears that fits your hand and your cutting style. Trying to do basic hair cuts with a blade that is too long for your hand is going to be both frustrating and dangerous.

Select a shear that "fits." Lay it in the palm of your hand and make sure it does not extend too far past your fingers. Using shears that are too long for your hand will increase the chance of cutting yourself. The basics include a pair of styling shears that fit your hand and a medium texturizing shear. Some refer to blending shears. Others call them texturizing shears. You need one that is approximately six inches in length and has 30 to 32 teeth.

Are you a seasoned professional looking for a specific application? If so, what do you want the shears to do that a basic pair will not do? Now look at the prospective new shear. Will it cut the way you want it to? Does the handle style fit your hand? If the finger and thumb holes are too large, you can consider a set of ring sizers. If it still does not feel good in your hand, look for another shear.

Cutting the way you want is only half the battle. It needs to feel good in your hand and not cause unnecessary fatigue. You must also understand the quality / price relationship. It gets a little tricky here because you can not always determine the quality of steel in the prospective new pair of shears.

Buying your shears from a local distributor who will be there to service your shears is a good start. One of the riskiest things to do is buy a "Show" special from someone you do not know. A guarantee is only as good as the company issuing it. There are some things you can look for. A well made shears will have professional craftsmanship in the look and feel of the shears. If the tension control does not fit well, or the ride area is uneven, you are not looking at a quality pair of shears. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Your shears are an important part of your career. Spend the extra and buy quality shears. They will pay for themselves in the long run. Do not let preconceived notions about where a pair of shears is made sway you. Most of the better quality shears are currently being manufactured in Asia.

The most common misunderstanding is the notion that all good shears are made in Japan. That is simply not true. Japan, China, Taiwan and Korea all have good quality shears. They also all have poor quality shears. You have to check the craftsmanship and know and trust the seller for the quality of steel. It takes more than just reading the label.

We have hired independent metallurgical laboratories to make a chemical analysis and a hardness test on shears. The results would amaze you. Some manufactures put a trace of cobalt in the blade and label it cobalt. Others import part of the materials or parts of the shear from Japan and then label the shears "Japan" trying to convince you they are good quality shears.

Purchase your shears from someone you know and trust. The bottom line is this; you must do your own home work on the shears you buy. And you must trust the company you buy from. That is one of the reasons all our Musashi Shears carry a lifetime warranty against factory defects. We want you to buy with confidence. If possible, buy from one of our distributors in your local area. If not feel free to call our toll free number and talk to us about the quality and validity of our warranty.
